General FAQs

I would like to volunteer in Tanzania but don’t have anyone to come with me. Is it possible to come alone?

Many of our volunteers and interns come alone. You will surely find friends at the house.
it’s possible to come alone!

How long is the normal work day for a volunteer/ intern? What time does the day start/ end?

Volunteers and Interns work five days a week. Interns work five to six hours a day, normal working hours is between 8am- 3pm, though for health care interns they can attend night shifts too. Volunteers usually start around 9 and finish by lunch time and time is flexible as they wish.

What if I get sick during my stay?

TVL team will always take you to the best available health care immediately. There are best doctors and hospitals in Moshi town. TVL House is 1 km away from KCMC Referral Hospital one of the best in Tanzania. We do recommend you to take a travel insurance that covers illnesses as well as your return flight home if suitable treatment is not available in Tanzania.

I would like to combine a few weeks of volunteering with a Kilimanjaro climb/Safari. Is this possible?

Yes. Many visitors combine volunteering/Internships with a Kilimanjaro Mt. climb, safari’s, short weekend trips or beach holiday at Pagani or Zanzibar. while you do your volunteering/internship period we allow 2 to 3 days weekend trips. Any longer trips should be done at the end of your working period. Remember to add a holiday time after your internship on your traveling plan.

How long is the normal work day for a volunteer/ intern? What time does the day start/ end?

Testimonials From Our Volunteers & Interns

I was real happy, people in Tanzania are really friendly, I have felt safe during my stay. I liked Swahili lesson and orientation, I have been very happy with TVL, the bbq part was real nice
I really recommend Eden Garden Primary School it is close to TVL house and the teachers in the upper wing are so nice and it has a great atmosphere
I have had a great experience in Tanzania
Clever and Shaina was always so helpful, I loved the food. I think the coffee tour was the best trip and I real recommend visiting Maasai village too and of cause Safari.

I did my internship at Majengo Health Center, I worked at antenatal care, family planning, vaccination clinic and at the labor ward. The busiest department from this center is the labour ward.
You can get to handle a delivery under a supervision of the nurses around, Working at Majengo Health Center is very different from Finland and a bit of amazing experience.  I don’t have any complaints about the TVL program fee, at first I thought it was quite expensive but when I get to live at TVL House I could feel were my money went.

I was in two different placement, Msamaria Centre for Street Children and Mahabusu (juvenile jail). This is very good option for longer internship because you can get to know different places and get different experience. Me and my friends we were 7 weeks in Msamaria and 5 weeks in Mahabusu.

The best thing in both places is, kids were eager to learn new things and they were so nice to volunteers. Everything at the house was very organized on time, the house was clean food was fantastic.

Elina
