Kibosho District Hospital

Kibosho Hospital is very old and important hospital in Moshi area. It is located high on mt Kilimanjaro slopes, on rain forest zone about 14 kilometers from Moshi town. The road to the hospital goes through vast banana plantations and zigzags along the steep slopes of the mountain. You can feel the high altitude on the much lower temperature. All around the hospital it is very common to see monkeys on the trees. 

The roots of the hospital date back to 1929 as the hospital started as dispensary. At the beginning it was just one building with 7 rooms and a few mud huts thatched with grass. In the 1950’s and 60’s were built wards for male, female and pediatrics which are still operative.  At the same time was constructed maternity clinic, isolation wards and houses for the personnel.

Later the hospital was expanded by offices for doctors, administrative offices, pharmacy, secretarial offices, Physiotherapy room, and out patient department waiting area. Also a separate building was constructed for the laboratory, x- ­ray department, Medical records and reception. 

Now the hospital has 225 beds, 120­-150 outpatients per day and about 100 deliveries in a month. Every morning there is a daily morning session for doctors, clinical officer, heads of departments and on duty nurses which is mainly for professional discussions and experience sharing on the day to day management of the patents. From time to time staff members are also asked to bring in suggestions and comments for improving Health care delivery in the hospital. 

The dental department and eye department of Kibosho hospital are offering 1st class quality services in the whole Kilimanjaro area. Other services that the hospital is also offering are e.g. Reproductive and child health (RCH) clinicVoluntary Canceling and Testing (VCT)Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMCT)Care and Treatment clinic (CTC) and Home Base Care (HBC).

To be able to do your internship in Kibosho hospital you need to be on 3rd year or further in your studies. Interns need to bring their own working clothes and shoes and also lot of gloves and hand disinfection liquid. 

Internship and voluntary work fee is USD 25/ week (Bring this money in cash, you will pay it strait to the hospital on your first day)
