Juvenile Detention Centre (Mahabusu ya Watoto)

The Juvenile Detention Centre in Moshi is one of the most impactful and meaningful placements we offer. The centre is a government-run facility operating under the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, and is managed by the Department of Social Welfare. It was established in 1970 to provide care, protection, and safe accommodation for children in conflict with the law while their cases are ongoing in court.

The centre has the capacity to host up to 50 children at a time, typically aged between 10 and 17 years. Many of the children come from vulnerable backgrounds, including street situations, although some still have family connections. They are placed in the centre after being involved in various offenses, ranging from minor crimes to more serious cases, and remain there temporarily while awaiting legal proceedings.

The main goal of the centre is not punishment, but rehabilitation, protection, and reintegration. A wide range of support services is provided, including:

  • Counseling and psychosocial support
  • Behavioural rehabilitation programs
  • Basic education and life skills training
  • Vocational and practical skills development
  • Sports and recreational activities
  • Spiritual care
  • Family reunification support when cases are completed
  • Provision of basic needs such as food, accommodation, clothing, and medical care

Children also participate in small-scale agricultural activities such as growing maize, bananas, fruits, and vegetables, which helps them develop practical skills and responsibility.

Role of Volunteers and Interns

Due to limited government resources, international volunteers and interns play an important supportive role in improving the daily lives of the children.

As a volunteer or intern, your involvement may include:

Morning Activities:

  • Assisting with basic education, including teaching reading and writing to children
  • Supporting lessons in subjects such as English, mathematics, and general studies for those with some educational background.
  • Computer skills teaching

Afternoon Activities:

  • Organising recreational and creative activities such as football, games, drawing, music, and dance classes
  • Supporting social interaction and positive engagement among the children

Your presence helps create a more stimulating, supportive, and humane environment for the children during their stay. In periods without external support, activities can be very limited, so your contribution makes a significant difference in their daily experience.

This placement requires a good level of responsibility, cultural sensitivity, and emotional awareness. Volunteers and interns are expected to approach their role with respect, patience, and understanding of the children’s diverse and often challenging backgrounds.
